With the number of youth that have used substance by the end of high school, it is imperative that we screen for substance use disorders and then guide them to treatment when a concern is discovered. All too often this is ignored due to lack of understanding or tools to conduct screening. This session will introduce participants to several screening tools, help them become aware of assessment strategies, and discuss determination of level of care. The utility of body fluid testing will also be addressed. Effective screens and assessment tools for Adolescent SUD.

Dr. Kenneth Zoucha
Dr. Kenneth Zoucha serves as Director of Addiction Medicine for the Department of Psychiatry at UNMC. Board certified in Pediatrics and Addiction Medicine, Dr. Zoucha has extensive experience that includes a 20-year career as a general pediatrician in Greater Nebraska. He now specializes in the treatment of substance use disorders in adolescents and peripartum women. After his career as a general pediatrician, Dr. Zoucha served as medical director for several adolescent secure care placement facilities throughout the state, and serves as the current medical director of Radius, a specialized restorative treatment center serving youth with a broad array of experiences, backgrounds, and trauma involved with juvenile justice.
Dr. Zoucha is a clinical educator of medical students, house officers, and other health care providers. Responding to the escalating national need, he championed the establishment of an Addiction Medicine fellowship at UNMC. He also led the development of an innovative executive addiction fellowship, featuring immersive experiences in addiction treatment for family medicine, pediatric and psychiatry house officers.
