On September 16, 2026, the Second Judicial District Veterans Treatment Court celebrated graduation at the Sarpy County Courthouse in Papillion, with Judge Nathan Cox presiding over the ceremony. Special guests included Sarpy County Commissioner Angi Burmeister, Chief Deputy John Reisz of the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office, John Hascall of the Sarpy County Public Defender’s Office, and Dylan Folchert of the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office. Volunteer military mentors, family members, and fellow Veterans Treatment Court participants also attended to recognize the graduates' achievements.

Judge Cox spoke with the participant about the importance of graduation and how proud he was of the graduate. In response, the graduate stated, “I started having a community. Rehabilitation is so much better than the alternative.” 

Graduation marks the successful completion of a rigorous, highly structured program that combines comprehensive behavioral health treatment, intensive community supervision, and a strong emphasis on personal accountability. The program requires a minimum commitment of 18 months, and upon successful completion, participants may have their criminal charges dismissed.

Veterans Treatment Courts provide an alternative pathway through the criminal justice system for nonviolent individuals with substance use disorders and other behavioral health needs. Using a collaborative, team-based approach, these courts integrate evidence-based treatment with close judicial supervision to promote long-term recovery and reduce recidivism. Participants receive individualized treatment plans based on validated risk and need assessments, frequent and random drug testing, ongoing judicial review, and incentives and sanctions designed to encourage positive behavioral change. The program also connects participants with supportive services and veteran-specific resources that strengthen recovery, improve stability, and enhance public safety.
