On July 10, 2026, the Sarpy County Wellness Court celebrated the graduation of program participants during a ceremony at the Sarpy County Courthouse in Papillion. The event recognized the graduates' successful completion of an intensive program designed to support individuals with mental illness who are involved in the criminal justice system by promoting stability, accountability, and long-term success.

The Wellness Court program typically requires a minimum commitment of 18 months and combines comprehensive behavioral health treatment, close community supervision, and a strong emphasis on personal responsibility. Participants work closely with a multidisciplinary team to address the underlying factors contributing to criminal behavior. Upon successfully completing all program requirements, participants have their criminal charges dismissed.

Judge Stefanie Martinez presided over the ceremony, which was attended by retired Judge Robert Wester, Senator Rick Holdcroft, Deputy Probation Administrator Bob Denton, retired defense attorney Christopher Lathrop, probation staff, treatment providers, and the graduates' family and friends.

During the ceremony, graduates received words of encouragement recognizing the progress they had made throughout their recovery journey. Judge Robert Wester told one graduate, "Justin, you have an innate sense of fairness and justice." Probation Officer Linda Gonzales encouraged the graduate to "continue to be unapologetically you."

Wellness Courts provide an alternative approach within the justice system for individuals whose criminal behavior is closely connected to mental health challenges and substance use disorders. Using a collaborative, team-based model, the program combines evidence-based practices—including risk and needs assessments, individualized treatment, frequent and random drug testing, incentives and sanctions, and ongoing judicial oversight—to reduce recidivism, improve behavioral health outcomes, and enhance public safety while supporting lasting recovery.
