On September 8, 2026, the Midwest Nebraska Problem-Solving Court in Dawson County held a graduation ceremony for five participants. Judge Chawnta Durham presided over the event, joined by Nebraska Court of Appeals Judge Michael E. Piccolo, who served as a guest speaker. 

Judge Durham spoke with participants about the importance of graduation, noting that it represents not only the completion of the program but also the beginning of something much larger. She acknowledged the difficult path each participant took to reach this point, explaining that the program demands sustained commitment, including treatment, drug testing, accountability, and the ability to show up even on the hardest days. Judge Durham commended the graduates for their strength and perseverance, saying they had demonstrated more courage than most people are ever asked to summon. She emphasized that recovery is not simply a private victory but a public good, and that is at the core of the Drug Court Program. She reminded participants that people do not get well on their own – and that by getting well, they “lift everyone around them.” 

Graduates also had the opportunity to share reflections. Mauricio recalled that the first time he attended a Drug Court status hearing, he witnessed someone graduating, and that moment inspired him. Leroy shared that he is in a better place mentally, has built a stronger and more positive support system, and plans to take life day by day. He added that if he ever needs help, he will reach out to the drug court staff. Jose, when asked what led to his success, said, “Stay away from old places and don't talk to old acquaintances. My family and church have been a positive support in my sobriety. I had a problem communicating before, but being in drug court has helped me with that, and I am getting better at communication with my family, with everyone.”

Midwest Nebraska Problem-Solving Court, like other Nebraska Problem-Solving Courts, uses a team approach in which a judge, prosecutor, defense counsel, community supervision officer, law enforcement, and treatment provider work together to design an individualized program for each participant. Compliance with treatment and court orders is verified by frequent alcohol and drug testing, close community supervision, and interaction with a judge during non-adversarial court review hearings.
