District Court Judge James G. Kube to Retire October 31, 2025

District Court Judge James G. Kube of the 7th Judicial District has announced his retirement, effective October 31, 2025. Judge Kube served the 7th District, comprised of Antelope, Cuming, Knox, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, and Wayne counties, since his appointment in 2009.

In his announcement letter to the governor, Judge Kube commended court staff district-wide as well as the legal community and reflected on the pleasure of serving in the judiciary.

Throughout his tenure, Judge Kube has served as a dedicated member of the Northeast Nebraska Adult Drug Court. Nebraska Adult Drug and DUI Courts utilize a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. Adult Drug and DUI Courts are designed to achieve a reduction in recidivism and substance use among high-risk and high-need individuals with substance use disorders.

After taking the bench in 2009, Kube has been regularly retained in his judicial position by area voters, most recently in 2024.

The first step in replacing Judge Kube will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the county court for the 7th Judicial District.
