Nebraska Supreme Court Justice John Freudenberg is seeking a judicial clerk to start in the fall of 2027. The clerkship will be for one year. Justice Freudenberg prefers applicants in the top 20% of the class.
A judicial clerkship is an attorney position involving highly responsible legal work directly assisting a Supreme Court justice with case-specific duties. The attorney in this position directly assists a Supreme Court justice with case specific duties. Law clerks are hired at the discretion of justice or judge.
Typical examples of a law clerk’s work are to prepare bench briefs on upcoming cases, review the record, research the law germane to the appeals under submission, prepare legal memoranda, synthesize factual analysis and complete legal research.
Clerks need considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research. They must possess the ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents concerned in difficult and complex cases. The ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, is a necessity along with skills in word processing.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Primary office location in State Capitol Building, with possibility of occasional remote work and some travel. Normal office hazards are encountered, i.e., prolonged sitting, along with the stress derived from the complexity of legal research and the confidential nature of the work.
HIRING RATE: $69,359.59 per year
NOTE: Annual salary increases typically occur on July 1 each year in an amount yet to be determined.
